On September 11, 2026, McCoy Elementary School hosted two “Groovin’ with the Grandparents” events. Our kindergarten through second-grade scholars and their grandparents attended the 9:30 a.m. session, while our third- through fifth-grade scholars and their grandparents participated in the 1:00 p.m. session.

During each event, the building principal, Mrs. Wheaton, shared information regarding the state’s new attendance policy and emphasized the importance of scholars attending school every day and remaining at school for the entire instructional day. The instructional coach, Mrs. Thompson, provided updates about the school newsletter and discussed the importance of strengthening foundational literacy skills for scholars in kindergarten through second grade. The assistant principal responsible for testing, Mrs. Emily Denton, also shared important assessment updates and upcoming testing dates.

The principal introduced the “Grandparents Activity Jar,” a special Make-and-Take activity designed to encourage grandparents and grandchildren to spend meaningful time together. Grandparents filled their jars with activity ideas that they could select and complete with their grandchildren at home. Suggested activities included reading a book together, sharing a family story, playing a game, preparing a favorite recipe, taking a walk, completing an art project, or practicing academic skills. The activity provided families with a fun and simple way to strengthen relationships while supporting learning beyond the school day.

The event was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our grandparents, provide families with important school updates, and strengthen the partnership between home and school. McCoy Elementary School sincerely appreciates every grandparent and family member who joined us and helped make “Groovin’ with the Grandparents” a memorable event for our scholars.
