Science Fair

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

April 14, 2026

Fourteen 8th grade students from Bettie E. Woolfolk Middle School proudly represented the Yazoo City Municipal School District at the 2026 Mississippi Science and Engineering State Fair, held at Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville.

Competing among some of the top young scientists across the state, Woolfolk scholars showcased their knowledge, creativity, and dedication through a wide range of research-based projects spanning robotics, environmental science, microbiology, engineering, and more. Their participation reflects months of preparation, critical thinking, and commitment to academic excellence.

Among this talented group, JheaBreia Miles earned 3rd place at the state level in Class 3 (Robotics and Intelligent Machines) for her project titled โ€œAI Decision Making Speed.โ€ Her achievement represents a significant accomplishment not only for herself but for Bettie E. Woolfolk Middle School and the Yazoo City School District.

While JheaBreia was the only Woolfolk scholar to place at the state level, all 14 students represented their school with excellence and integrity. Each student had the opportunity to present their research, engage with judges, and experience a competitive academic environment that many students never encounter.

โ€œThis experience was bigger than awards,โ€ said Milya J. Moore, 8th Grade Science Lead Teacher. โ€œOur students walked into a space that challenged them to think critically, speak confidently, and stand in their knowledge. They represented Woolfolk with pride, and that alone is something to celebrate.โ€

The state fair provided students with exposure to advanced scientific thinking, collegiate environments, and peer collaboration across Mississippi. For many, it served as a powerful reminder that their potential reaches far beyond the classroom.

The Woolfolk scholars return home not only with recognition, but with growth, confidence, and inspiration to continue pursuing excellence in science. Their journey reflects the strength, resilience, and brilliance within the Yazoo City School District.

Bettie E. Woolfolk Middle School continues to push forward, proving that its students are capable, competitive, and destined for greatness.
