YCHS Art Students Paint Food Pantry Boxes for Veterans Affairs
Students at Yazoo City High School recently put their artistic talents to work in service of the community. Under the guidance of art instructor Ms. Gail Amebeu, YCHS art students painted and decorated food pantry drop-off boxes for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
The project was designed to support the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center, which provides drive-thru food pantries for Veterans and their families. These colorful and meaningful boxes will be placed at entrances to the facility, serving as a visible reminder of the community’s commitment to honoring those who have served.
In a letter of thanks to the district, Michael B. Renfrow, Executive Director and CEO of the VA Medical Center, expressed deep gratitude to the students and staff. He noted that their creativity “added both beauty and meaning to this important initiative” and that the decorated boxes will help ensure Veterans have access to nutritious meals each month. The VA also recognized the outstanding coordination of Dr. Tulwana Belcher, Dr. Sharon Brown, Ms. Lakecia Martin, and Tommisha Johnson in making the project a success.
Yazoo City Municipal School District extends a special thank you to Ms. Amebeu and her students for using their creativity to serve others. Their art not only beautifies the donation boxes but also sends a powerful message of compassion and support to the Veterans who will benefit from this effort.
