Shoutout to Yazoo City High School! As part of the Mississippi Delta GEAR UP Partnership’s work on strengthening Algebra I through Evidence-Based Problem Solving (EBPS), YCHS was selected for a special focus group led by the Vela Institute.
11 incredible students shared their experiences around what’s working, what’s challenging, and what supports help most in Algebra I. Their honesty, thoughtful feedback, and positive attitudes were truly inspiring!
Students highlighted the impact of one-on-one support, clearer explanations, and building confidence with tough concepts. They expressed deep appreciation for their teachers’ teaching methods, genuine commitment, and sincere concern for their success. Many even said this year’s learning experience has been the best they’ve ever had in math.
